This tragic incident resulted in the sentencing of three teenagers involved in the attack on John Hackett, who ultimately lost his life. The teenagers, aged 15 and 16, were initially charged with murder but pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
The judge, Mr. Justice Choudhury, described the attack as “grave” and emphasized that Mr. Hackett’s death could have been prevented had medical treatment been sought. He highlighted the cruelty of the attack, during which Mr. Hackett pleaded for mercy while struggling to breathe.
The court heard how the teenagers subjected Mr. Hackett to verbal abuse and bullying leading up to the fatal attack. The incident, which lasted just 36 seconds, resulted in severe injuries, including broken ribs and a split kidney.
During sentencing, the male defendants received a two-year detention and training order, with a one-year custodial element followed by a year of supervision in the community.
The 16-year-old girl was sentenced to an 18-month detention and training order, with nine months to be served in custody and a nine-month period of supervision.
Mr. Hackett’s mother, Christine Smith, was visibly distraught during the proceedings as video footage of the attack and previous harassment incidents were shown in court.
This case serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of violent actions and the importance of seeking help and intervention to prevent harm to others.
