Shamima Begum and 18 other women from Britain are held in a camp in Syria. The camp’s commander says there are also 35 children from Britain there. This number is higher than what people thought before.
The British government took away citizenship from these women and won’t let them come back to the UK because they’re worried about safety.
The people who run the camp want Britain to take these women and children back. They say it’s dangerous having them there because some mothers are teaching their kids extreme ideas instead of sending them to school.
One woman, Wajda Rashid, regrets going to Syria with her husband. She wants to go back to Britain with her son. She says she misses her family a lot. Wajda’s husband, Yasser Iqbal, left his life in the UK to join ISIS. He’s now in a prison in Syria.
Living conditions in the camp are demanding, especially since the water supply got bombed. Wajda got hurt in airstrikes and needs medical help. Some other countries have allowed women like Wajda to return, but the UK won’t because they think they could be dangerous.
A charity report says there could be up to 60 British children in camps like these in Syria. The UK has brought back some of them, but not all.
