The identity of the winner of last summer’s staggering $1.08-billion Powerball jackpot has finally been disclosed, while another lucrative prize awaits participants this coming Saturday.
Yanira Alvarez emerged as the fortunate individual who secured the winning ticket back in July, making the purchase from Las Palmitas Mini Market situated in downtown Los Angeles, as revealed by a recent announcement from the California Lottery. The organization did not disclose specific details regarding Alvarez’s residency or profession.
This remarkable windfall stands as the third-largest Powerball jackpot ever recorded and ranks as the seventh-largest jackpot in the history of U.S. lotteries. Alvarez clinched the winning ticket following an astounding 39 consecutive draws that passed without a victor.
The anticipation now shifts to the upcoming Powerball draw scheduled for this Saturday, boasting an estimated jackpot of $935 million or a tempting cash value of $452.3 million.

In a separate announcement earlier this month, the California Lottery disclosed the fortunate winner of October’s staggering $1.765-billion Powerball jackpot. Theodorus Struyck emerged as the representative of a collective group of individuals who purchased the winning ticket from Midway Market located in Frazier Park.
Last year’s jackpot bonanzas collectively contributed approximately $197.9 million toward funding public schools and higher education institutions in California, according to information provided by the release.
Expressing gratitude, California Lottery Director Harjinder Chima stated in the release, “We can’t thank our players enough for their help in supporting California’s public schools.”
Alvarez’s win marks the second notable Powerball jackpot secured in L.A. County within the span of a year, following the acquisition of a ticket worth $2.04 billion at an Altadena gas station in November 2022.
Winners of such monumental jackpots are presented with the option of receiving their earnings in either 30 annual installments or as a lump sum. Alvarez opted for the latter, receiving a staggering $558.1 million before tax deductions.
