Former Massachusetts Congressman William Delahunt Dies at Age 82

Former U.S. Rep. William Delahunt of Massachusetts Has Died Aged 82

Longtime U.S. Representative William D. Delahunt, a prominent figure in Massachusetts politics and a steadfast advocate for Democratic principles, has passed away after battling a prolonged illness, as confirmed by his family.

Delahunt, who served as a congressman for 14 years representing Massachusetts’s 10th congressional district from 1997 to 2011, passed away at his home in Quincy, Massachusetts, at the age of 82, according to reports.

Before his tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, Delahunt served as the Norfolk County district attorney for over two decades, from 1975 to 1996. His political career commenced in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where he served from 1973 to 1975.

In a statement released by the Delahunt family, his passing was described as peaceful, though the specific cause of death was not disclosed. The family expressed their grief while celebrating Delahunt’s legacy of commitment, service, and inspiration, remembering him as a source of wisdom, comfort, and humor.

Reflecting on Delahunt’s contributions, Democratic Senator Ed Markey praised his extensive public service both as a legislator in Washington and as a prosecutor in Norfolk County. Markey recalled a recent meeting with Delahunt, highlighting his enduring dedication to serving the people of Massachusetts.

President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela also paid tribute to Delahunt, recalling his role in brokering a deal with former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to provide heating oil for low-income residents of Massachusetts in 2005. Delahunt’s attendance at Chavez’s state funeral in 2013 underscored his commitment to diplomacy and international relations.

Delahunt’s decision to retire from Congress in 2011 marked the end of an illustrious career. He had initially contemplated retirement but was persuaded by the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy to remain in office to advance President Barack Obama’s legislative agenda. Delahunt’s early endorsement of Obama’s presidential campaign reflected his progressive stance and commitment to political change.

In announcing his retirement, Delahunt cited the profound impact of Senator Kennedy’s passing, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing personal relationships and spending time with loved ones outside of the political arena.

William D. Delahunt’s enduring legacy is marked by his steadfast dedication to serving the people of Massachusetts and upholding Democratic principles. While his passing creates a void in both the political world and the hearts of those who were touched by his presence, his impactful contributions will be fondly remembered and valued for generations to come.
