GOP Representative Criticizes Marjorie Taylor Greene’s ‘Idiotic’ Move

Republican Congressman Rebukes ‘Idiotic’ Marjorie Taylor Greene

Representative Mike Lawler, a Republican from New York, sharply criticized Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene’s recent move to challenge House Speaker Mike Johnson, a fellow Republican from Louisiana, labeling it as “idiotic.” Lawler made these remarks during an appearance on CNN’s State of the Union last Sunday.

Greene, a Republican from Georgia, stirred controversy by proposing a motion to remove Johnson from his position as speaker. This move came in response to Johnson’s backing of a $1.2 trillion spending bill, which included allocations for crucial agencies like the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security through September 30.

The spending bill was approved by the House on March 22 in a vote of 286-134, with Johnson relying on support from House Democrats due to opposition from 112 Republicans, including Greene. The bill was subsequently passed in the Senate and signed into law by President Joe Biden.

Despite Greene’s motion, which has not yet been formally submitted for consideration, it won’t be addressed by Congress until after the Easter recess.

During his interview on CNN, Lawler expressed doubt about Greene’s commitment to pursuing the motion, stating, “I can’t speak for her.” He further criticized the motion, emphasizing its detrimental impact on the Republican majority in the House. Lawler reiterated his stance that Greene’s actions are counterproductive and fail to advance the party’s objectives.

The House Republicans are facing a precarious situation with a slim one-vote majority following the resignation of three GOP members and an upcoming retirement. Meanwhile, Democrats have gained ground, securing an additional seat through a special election in February.

Lawler emphasized the importance of maintaining unity within the Republican Party to effectively challenge the Biden administration’s policies, particularly concerning spending and foreign affairs. He criticized internal discord among Republicans, warning that it undermines their ability to oppose the administration’s agenda.

Representative Don Bacon, a Republican from Nebraska, echoed Lawler’s sentiments during an appearance on Meet the Press. He highlighted the need for solidarity within the party and criticized individuals who prioritize personal attention over collective goals.

The looming issue of providing aid to Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia has further exacerbated tensions within the Republican Party. While there is bipartisan support for additional aid, some Republicans have expressed reservations, complicating efforts to pass legislation in the House.

House Intelligence Committee chair Mike Turner, a Republican from Ohio, emphasized the urgency of addressing the Ukraine crisis upon Congress’s return. He expressed confidence in garnering bipartisan support for aid to Ukraine despite potential opposition from certain factions within the party.

However, Turner acknowledged challenges posed by disruptive elements within the Republican Party without explicitly naming them. He alluded to the House Freedom Caucus, from which Greene was expelled in 2023, suggesting their propensity to disrupt party unity in pursuit of their far-right agenda.
