In a major step for the upcoming presidential election, independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his vice-presidential partner, Nicole Shanahan, gained the right to be on the ballot in Michigan on Thursday. They achieved this through the Natural Law Party.

The Natural Law Party, advocating for an “all-party government” approach to problem-solving, finalized the necessary paperwork with the state after holding a convention in Michigan where Kennedy and Shanahan were nominated.

Party Chair Doug Dern expressed enthusiasm for Kennedy’s candidacy, describing him as exceptionally qualified for the role. He welcomed Kennedy and Shanahan into the party fold, emphasizing their commitment to innovative governance.

The inclusion of Michigan on Kennedy’s electoral map adds a twist to the state’s political landscape, potentially challenging President Joe Biden’s standing.

Biden faced criticism from Michigan’s sizable Muslim community for his administration’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict. In the state primary, over 13% of voters cast “uncommitted” ballots as a protest against Biden’s pro-Israel position.

Bill Costantino, the Michigan regional coordinator for Kennedy’s campaign, highlighted Kennedy’s environmental credentials, emphasizing his dedication to revitalizing the Great Lakes region.

Kennedy’s advocacy for environmental issues spanning four decades positions him as a strong advocate for Michigan’s ecological and economic interests, particularly in the fishing sector.

While Kennedy’s ballot access in Michigan marks a positive milestone for his campaign, he faces opposition not only from Republicans but also from within his own family.

On Thursday, fifteen members of the Kennedy family announced their endorsement of Biden, underscoring the challenges Kennedy faces in securing broader support.

Kennedy’s campaign has gained traction nationally, polling close to 10% according to The Hill/Decision Desk HQ, making him the most prominent third-party candidate since Ross Perot in 1992. With ballot access secured in nine states, including Michigan, Kennedy’s campaign continues to gain momentum ahead of the election.
