The United Nations’ humanitarian aid agency has issued a stark warning, stating that hundreds of thousands of lives are at immediate risk if Israel proceeds with a military offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

This city serves as a crucial entry point for humanitarian aid and is currently home to many displaced Palestinians, with numerous residents residing in densely populated tent camps. An Israeli airstrike in Rafah overnight on Friday resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, the majority of whom were children.

In response, the Biden administration, a key supporter of Israel both diplomatically and militarily, has stated its opposition to any invasion of Rafah unless Israel presents a “credible” plan for safeguarding civilian lives.

Turkey, Israel’s important trading partner, has taken remarkable action in response to the escalating situation in Rafah by suspending all imports and exports to Israel. The country’s trade minister cited the deteriorating situation in Rafah as the reason for this decision.

International mediators are attempting to negotiate a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. A leaked proposal for a truce suggests potential compromises from both sides, signaling a potential breakthrough after months of stalled negotiations.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in the displacement of approximately 80% of Gaza’s population, totaling 2.3 million people, from their homes.

Several towns and cities in Gaza have suffered extensive damage, and northern Gaza is on the brink of famine. Local health officials report a death toll exceeding 34,500 people in Gaza, with the entire territory facing a dire humanitarian crisis.

The conflict erupted on October 7 when Hamas initiated attacks on southern Israel, resulting in the abduction of approximately 250 individuals and the deaths of around 1,200, mostly civilians. Israel claims that militants continue to hold approximately 100 hostages and the remains of over 30 others.
