Following the passage of Senate Bill 36 by the Oklahoma state House, the Satanic Temple (TST) has made public its plans to deploy ministers in public schools across the state. This move comes in response to the measure, which would allow for the presence of volunteer chaplains in public schools, albeit with certain conditions attached.

Under the provisions of the bill, school districts must conduct thorough background checks on prospective chaplains. Individuals who are registered sex offenders or have been convicted of a felony offense are expressly prohibited from serving in this capacity.

Additionally, the bill outlines grounds for the dismissal of chaplains, including instances of mental or physical abuse towards students, negligent endangerment, or engaging in acts of moral turpitude.

Should the bill successfully cross its way through the Senate, it is scheduled to take effect on November 1, impacting the earth of religious expression within Oklahoma’s public school system.

In response to this legislative development, the Satanic Temple has reiterated its commitment to religious plurality and community service.

While expressing a preference for states to invest in professional counselors over unlicensed religious support for students, Rachel Chambliss, TST’s Executive Director of Operations, emphasized the organization’s willingness to adapt to the legislative conditions imposed by Senate Bill 36.

Chambliss stated that TST is fully prepared to offer compassionate guidance to students who seek their support, with the aim of facilitating positive changes in their lives by addressing their needs in a supportive manner.

TST’s announcement underscores the organization’s dedication to providing a platform for individuals to express their religious beliefs and access support services within the framework of public institutions.

By positioning itself as a resource for students in need, TST aims to contribute to the well-being and development of the student body while promoting the values of religious freedom and inclusivity.

The decision to deploy ministers in public schools represents a strategic response by TST to legislative changes impacting religious expression in educational settings.

As the debate surrounding the role of religion in public schools continues, TST’s proactive stance highlights the organization’s commitment to advocating for religious plurality and ensuring that all students have access to the support they require, regardless of their religious affiliations.
