Nigel Slater was born in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, on 9 April 1956. He was the youngest of three children born to Cyril Slater and Kathleen Slater. In the year 1965, Slater’s mother passed away due to asthma. His father later married their family cleaning lady Dorothy Perrins in the year 1971 and died in 1973. In Penn, Staffordshire, Slater attended Woodfield Avenue School. As a teenager, he relocated to Worcestershire. He was a student at Chantry High School, where he cherished writing essays and was one of only two boys to study cooking at O-level.
Slater writes that he used food to outdo his stepmother for his father’s affection in his autobiography. He wanted to make lemon meringue pie for his father since it was his favorite. However, his stepmother was unwilling to share her recipe, so Slater took it into his own hands to find out the recipe from her. He slowly built up the recipe over months by watching his stepmom working on it and discovering ingredients one by one.
Slater earned an OND in catering from Worcester Technical College in 1976. Following this, he started working in restaurants and hotels all over the United Kingdom.
