He began figure skating at the age of three with a pair of white figure skaters belonging to his sister and competed in his first competition at the age of four. Chen, in addition to figure skating, studied ballet at the Ballet West Academy in Salt Lake City and participated in gymnastics for seven years at the state and regional levels. Nathan Chen’s First figure skating competition was in 2003. From 2007 through 2009, he qualified for the US Junior Nationals at the juvenile and intermediate levels. He placed 10th and 3rd in the junior classes at the 2007 and 2008 Junior Nationals, respectively. At the 2009 Junior Nationals, he won silver in the intermediate men’s event. Chen was promoted to the novice level in the 2009–10 season. He became the sport’s youngest novice champion when he won the national novice championship at the 2010 U.S. Championships in Spokane, Washington, at the age of ten.

He chose to stay at the novice level for the 2010–2011 season due to his young age, and he defended his novice championship in the 2011 U.S. Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. For the 2011–2012 season, Chen was promoted to the junior level. His coach was Genia Chernyshova, then he traveled to Lake Arrowhead, California, to study with Rafael Arutyunyan, a jumpmaster. Arutyunyan took over as his primary coach in mid-December 2011. On January 24, 2012, Chen won the junior men’s title in the 2012 U.S. Championships in San Jose, California. On his first international appearance, he won the novice men’s event at the 2012 Gardena Spring Trophy in Selva Val Gardena, Italy.

Nathan Chen began his Olympic season with a fourth-place finish in the short program at the 2021 Skate America. On his first quadruple jump, he tripped. He was unable to complete the required two-jump combo because of a poor landing on the second quadruple leap. Despite double on two of his six planned quads, he finished second in the free skate and third overall behind Vincent Zhou and Shoma Uno. Chen noted later that the termination of his winning streak dating back to the 2018 World Championships was “not upsetting.” It was to finish up as a winning streak at some point, and I am proud of these men up here.”

Chen bounced back the following week at the 2021 Skate Canada International, winning both parts and taking the gold medal by 48 points over silver winner Jason Brown. Chen’s performance qualified him for the Grand Prix Final, although it was eventually canceled due to the Omicron variant’s constraints. Chen earned his sixth men’s gold medal in a row at the 2022 U.S. Olympic Games. Championships in Nashville, a feat last accomplished 71 years ago by the famous Dick Button. Chen set a new national record with a score of 115.39 in the short program and 212.62 in the free skate, for a total of 328.01 points. Following the competition, Chen, Zhou, and Brown were named to the American Olympic team.
