Trump’s Ukraine Peace Plan Revealed, Expert Criticizes It as ‘Terrible’

Donald Trump’s recent assertion that he could swiftly end the conflict in Ukraine within a day seems to hinge on a controversial strategy of pressuring Ukraine to cede Crimea and the Donbas region to Russia, as per sources familiar with the plan cited in The Washington Post’s Sunday edition.

According to individuals who have directly spoken with Trump, he believes that both Russia and Ukraine are seeking a way to de-escalate the situation while saving face.

Trump reportedly indicated that some Ukrainians would be amenable to becoming part of Russia. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly rejected any notion of surrendering territory.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, sparked by Russia’s illegal invasion, has resulted in a devastating toll, with over 500,000 casualties, including fatalities and severe injuries, as estimated by intelligence sources.

A spokesperson for Trump’s campaign dismissed the Post’s article as speculative, sidestepping questions regarding the alleged strategy outlined in the report.

This proposed strategy contrasts sharply with President Joe Biden’s efforts to counter Russian aggression by providing military assistance to Ukraine, a stance that has garnered support from many Republicans.

Critics, including foreign policy experts and prominent figures like Senator Lindsey Graham, have expressed skepticism and concern about Trump’s reported approach.

Graham noted that such a move would eventually benefit Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose aggressive actions would be rewarded if Ukraine conceded territory.

Emma Ashford, a fellow at the Stimson Center, criticized Trump’s alleged proposal. She stated that surrendering land to Russia for a cease-fire would not guarantee lasting peace for Ukraine and described the proposal as a “terrible deal” that would not serve Ukraine’s long-term interests.

Trump’s public statements have previously hinted at a favorable stance toward Russia. In February, he suggested that he would support Russia in taking aggressive actions against NATO countries that had not fulfilled their financial obligations to the alliance.

Trump has repeatedly boasted about his ability to swiftly resolve the Ukrainian conflict if he were to return to the presidency. However, the details of his proposed strategy, particularly the idea of pressuring Ukraine to cede territory to Russia, have raised concerns and skepticism among experts and political observers alike.
