In the Democratic primary race for the Maryland Senate, Rep. David Trone (D-Md.) leads Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks by an outstanding margin, according to a recent poll conducted by FOX45 News, the Baltimore Sun, and the University of Baltimore, in collaboration with OpinionWorks.

The poll indicates that Trone is ahead of Alsobrooks by 19 points, with Trone securing 48 percent of the support compared to Alsobrooks’ 29 percent when respondents consider the entire Democratic primary field.

In a head-to-head matchup between Trone and Alsobrooks, Trone maintains a lead with 50 percent support among Democratic primary respondents, while Alsobrooks receives 38 percent.

On the Republican side, former Gov. Larry Hogan (R) enjoys a substantial lead with 69 percent support among Republican primary respondents. Hogan’s closest competitor, former Del. Robin Ficker (R), receives only 9 percent support, while 12 percent of respondents remain undecided.

In hypothetical matchups, Hogan maintains a serious lead over Trone and Alsobrooks. Against Trone, Hogan leads 53 percent to 40 percent, and against Alsobrooks, he leads 54 percent to 36 percent.

Despite Trone’s remarkable financial investment in the race, which reportedly amounts to $40 million, he trails Hogan by 13 points in a potential general election matchup.

Having been elected statewide statewide before, Hogan’s established name recognition likely contributes to his advantage. While some earlier polling suggested a tighter race between Trone and Alsobrooks, the current data indicates a more important lead for Trone.

Both campaigns express confidence in their respective candidates’ electoral prospects, with Trone’s campaign emphasizing his track record of delivering change and Alsobrooks’s campaign asserting that she is the candidate preferred by Marylanders as they learn more about her.

Despite his lead, Hogan maintains that his campaign is the underdog and emphasizes the need to work diligently to overcome establishment opposition. Despite Maryland’s historical Democratic leanings, Hogan’s candidacy is considered a huge opportunity for Senate Republicans to compete in a traditionally blue state.

The latest polling was conducted between April 7 and April 10, surveying 1,292 general election voters with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. This included 600 likely Democratic primary voters with a margin of error of 4 percentage points and 451 likely Republican primary voters with a margin of error of 4.6 percentage points.
