Kaagaz: A Common Man’s Journey to Prove Himself Alive

Kaagaz

The year 2020 might not be flourishing for the entertainment industry, but it indeed proved to be a blooming one for the veteran actor Pankaj Tripathi. From starring in Angrezi Medium to making his appearance in Extraction. From ruling the screens in Mirzapur to being the softhearted father in Gunjan Saxena, he has been a perfect treat for our eyes. While many actors struggled to have their project on floors, Pankaj Tiwari seemed to rule our hearts a little more last year. Apart from the above-mentioned projects, he has starred in Ludo, Criminal Justice, and Shakeela in a span of nine months and proved to be a favorite element of Online streaming platforms.

With the arrival of a new year, Pankaj Tripathi is all set to return back to our screens with his upcoming film titled ‘Kaagaz.’ The film marks the directorial comeback of actor-director Satish Kaushik, who will also be seen in a pivotal role in the film. Apart from Pankaj Tripathi, the film also stars Monal Gujjar, Sandeepa Dhar, Amar Upadhyay, and Mita Vasisht.

Kagaaz is inspired by the real-life struggles of Bharat Lal, a resident of Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. He was declared dead on the official papers, and the film depicts his journey of proving himself alive. The film portrays the flawed administration of India, especially for backward places in the country, and how a common man is made to suffer for things he shouldn’t be worried about. The team of Kaagaz has taken up a sensitive yet weird topic and used a humorous form to bring it to life. Such a story needs to reach a maximum number of people to make them aware of incidents that seem too strange to be true.

Satish Kaushik’s 14th directorial is a satirical comedy that will draw commentaries on different branches of state administration. The trailer of the film was dropped on 24 December 2020 on YouTube and managed to gather positive reviews from the viewers. The trailer opens up on a humorous note where a person comes up to Bharat Lal and asks, “Are Bharat bhaiya, Kaun mar gya?” to which he replies, “hum hi mar gaye,” hinting at the confusion, the legal documents have created.

As the trailer proceeds, we see him requesting the Sarpanch to sanction the documents that prove he is alive, and the Sarpanch directly declines it. We further see glimpses of his daily life where he is mocked and referred to as a “ghost” or “spirit.” He ends up meeting a lawyer who he feels would help him prove himself alive in the eyes of the government. Bharat Lal is approached by the media for interviews, and we see him escaping and hiding, for he feels he has been mocked enough in his town. If some other news regarding his case is broadcasted, the entire nation will come to know about his ‘mock-worthy’ case.

But as we delve deep into the trailer, the humor somewhat vanishes, and we see the real pain that lies within the topic. A common man strolling from office to office, reaching officials who have no intentions to help him out. We see his family and him getting broken to some extent. But soon, he rises again, and we see him fighting for his right. Will Bharat Lal be able to prove himself alive?

Well, for that, you don’t have to wait much. ‘Kaagaz’ is all set to premiere on 7th January 2021 on Zee5. Witness the story of Bharat Lal on your screens and see whether a common man trapped amidst a flawed system makes it on his own or not.
